You'll just be dabbing pollen onto the stigma to create something new.
Verify that you're crossing plants with the same numbers of chromosomes to create successful crosses, for example diploids with diploids and tetraploids with tetraploids.
One tip I'll suggest is purchasing a box of refillable tea bags (drawstring organza bags work too) to protect your seedpods while they ripen and serve as a visual reminder not to bump into them.
